Paintings related to literature, apart from the historical aspects, are one of the representations of the relationship between art and literature in the history of Iranian painting. In this research, eight rare and complete works of iconography with the influence of the story of Yusuf and Zuleikha in the Qajar period are depicted, which have the characteristics of the art of court iconography in this period, and are subjected to visual analysis. This continuous collection has eight complete paintings of the story of Yusuf and Zulikha, which is one of the classic stories of Iranian literature and has been represented and painted many times by artists in different periods. These eight paintings are a reflection of the art of iconography of the first Qajar period in the representation of people, decorations and motifs, and the architectural space with influence from two sources, religion and literature. The main goal of this research is to study eight paintings of Yusuf and Zuleikha with the characteristics of court portrait painting as a complete and continuous collection in the sequence of the story, which as a lesser known example of this narrative in the painting of the first period of Qajar has not been the subject of independent research and is studied in this research. In these paintings as a collection, the efforts of the artists in representing portraiture, motifs, clothes and decorations are the characteristics of the painting of this period with the influence of the story. The question of this research, how is the visual and structural reading of the story of Yusuf and Zuleikha represented in this collection of paintings in important scenes? The research method in this research is descriptive-analytical, using library sources and examining eight examples of paintings by Yusuf and Zuleikha. The method of analyzing these eight paintings is based on the visual principles and rules used in the appearance of paintings with the criteria of Qajar court portrait painting. The results of this research show that these eight paintings with the theme of Yusuf and Zuleikha are influenced by Surah Yusuf in the Qur'an and Jami literature and the structural and visual characteristics of court portrait painting of the first Qajar period. The compositions are dynamic, character-oriented, and are depicted with an emphasis on Hazrat Yusuf (AS), and the attempt is to show a visual story with a romantic and lyrical theme. The artists of the work are unknown, but it is assumed that Muhammad Hassan, Ahmad or their students worked with this style and had full knowledge of the characteristics of court portrait painting and its image rules. The painters of the works have benefited from the artistic spirit and characteristics of Qajar art in showing the story.
