Decoration issue in the historiography of Islamic art has been one of the controversial challenges. The recognition and classification of Islamic decorations have been the historian's concern starting with Orientalist approaches to Islamic territories and continuing with the methodology and definition of decoration concepts. The concept of Islamic decorations is nevertheless an open problem despite contemporary research.
Different and even distinct methods and approaches have been proposed in this field. One of these views is the historical approach of Oleg Grabar, which tries to explain the principles and framework for understanding the meanings of decoration in Islamic art. This research seeks to analyze and explain the angles of Grabar's theoretical framework concerning the ambiguous nature of decoration to gain a greater understanding of Grabar's approach.
Therefore, this research is responsible for answering the " What are Grabar's preassumption and pillars of Grabar theory ?"
2-, what can be understood about ornament, according to Grabar's theory?
This article aims to enhance an understanding of Oleg Grabar's historical perspective on Islamic decoration. Based on the findings of this research, Grabar considers three general presumptions of "universality", "possibility" and "classifying" in his theory, and his theory is based on three components. "Instant pleasure", "association" and "mediation", have a direct link with "Opti-semic" perception.
