Abstract

The horse blanket was a type of horse clothing that was produced in various shapes and forms, different raw materials and various designs. Some blankets covered a small part of the horse, including the withers or their head and neck, which were vulnerable during battle, and others covered the entire body of the horse, excluding the legs, tail, underbelly, ears, eyes and mouth. This type of armor, which we know here as "horse armor", seems to have become completely popular in the Safavid era and has displaced small armor. A reliable source such as the Shahnameh of Tahmaspi correctly illustrates this point. The authors are trying to describe and analyze 35 selected examples with the aim of identifying the types of horse armor in the paintings of Shahnameh Tahmaspi and answering the question of what patterns were applied to the textile surface of these blanket? According to the study, the diversity of Horse blanke in Shahnameh Tahmaspi was also a field to show the capabilities of the artists of that era, and the Horse blanke of Shahnameh Tahmaspi, while expressing part of the objective realities of the Safavid era, was mostly a mental field to show the creative power of the artists and was far from the existing realities. The artisan artist of the Safavid era tried to consider a novel work of combined form and pattern for the armor of horses. The aforementioned armor has plant patterns (Islamic and Khatai designs), animal (hunting animals, ducks and mythological creatures) and free (free designs also include geometric, fractal, lattice and simple).
