A Study on the Figurative Sculptures from the Islamic Revolution to the End of the Iran-Iraq War with Regard to the Modernism

Abstract

The main stream art in Iran following the revolution till the end of the Iran-Iraq war is religious in nature and committed to the values of the Islamic revolution. Despite the  ignorance or disapproval towards the pre-revolutionary artistic achievements, renouncing Western Modernism, priority of content to the form and the attempts to develop the forms to better convey and communicate the content and messages to public, some of the scholars and artists declared the results unsuccessful and in accordance to the Modernism after all. Therefore this paper, focusing on the study of the figurative sculpture and committed art in the mentioned time span attempts to revisit its characteristics with regard to the definitions and features of the Modernism. The revolutionary and committed art, devoted to the values of the Islamic revolution, remains active to this day. The examination of its development, may lead to a better understanding of its more recent qualities. This paper aimed at the study of figurative sculpture from 1979 revolution to the end of Iran-Iraq war, answers the following questions:
-           What forms do the figurative representations take in the post-revolutionary sculpture?
-           How is the committed art read with regard to the Modernism and its achievements?
The research method was descriptive-analytical, based on library sources. The findings indicate that the post-revolutionary figurative sculpture, whether realistic, abstract or fragmented, like other artistic media, mostly attempts to play its role as a medium to convey the religious, revolutionary values and distances itself from the Modernism.
